Now I’m not much of a rap fan, never have been. But as a regular follower of YesYesY’all I get my daily enjoyable dose of that genre of music. A while ago, under the category “Guilty Pleasures” Josh posted an article about Illinoize.

This album consists of 7 mash-ups of Sufjan Stevens (his music is the soundtrack of many moments in my life) with diverse rap artists such as Big Daddy Kane, Gift of Gab or Pete Rock.

Without further due:

– The Dress Looks Nice on You / Make You Feel That Way (f. Gift of Gab)
– Star of Wonder / None Shall Pass (f. Aesop Rock)

This masterpiece was created by Montreal based (woop!) producer Tor and is totally free (woop! woop!) to download here.

Damn it’s been long since I did a post on music, I guess I just got all caught up on wanting to post nice stuff on yayeveryday.com and kind of neglected putting tunes up here too :)

Anyways, this post is about a band I recently discovered and have really enjoyed listening to. I think the first time I heard about them was when I discovered a cover by the two lovely girls of First Aid Kit (its beautiful, don’t miss it). They were singing the Tiger Mountain Peasant Song. I’ve now listened to the original a good dozen times and I’m not stopping now:

I find this particular song to be quite apart from the rest of the album Fleet Foxes because the lead singer Robin Pecknold plays it alone with an acoustic guitar. Which gives the song a slightly naked (but beautiful) sound compared to the other songs where the five-piece band brings on the full set of instruments and three more voices. The rest of the album is just as good but has more of an imposing harmony to it.

– White Winter Hymnal
– Ragged Wood

All in all, great sound, great music. I know this is more a photography blog, but I’d like to put up some great graphic design work too that Richard Carey has done for this band’s vinyl cover (which I found over on Change The Thought):

Finally if you think I’ve made a mess of music posts and still want photography inspiration, well Bennie from Creative Output has a nice little treat for you. In Square and Circle you’ll find pictures of women in underwear, half shaven sheep, little gingers and angry indigenous people. Great photography basically :)

Its not everyday that you hear of a band with its members all being from the same family. Together Anthony (Caleb) Followill, Michael (Jared) Followill, Ivan (Nathan) Followill, and Cameron (Matthew) Followill make great sounding rock music. This band of Kings is all about the vocals. Caleb Followill has this deep, strong, hypnotizing voice which, combined with the bands catchy riffs, makes great energizing rock. I’m fairly new to their music, having only discovered them through “Sex on Fire” from their latest album Only By the Night.

If you like names like Joy Division, Radiohead you will digg this:

– Sex On Fire

– On Call

– Knocked Up

– Fans

Arcade Fire

Now thats a band worth mentioning.

Its also a band with 7 members, that should give you a little idea of the sound-range we are talking here. Not only do they have an insane amount of instruments in each song, they all know how to play each of them and they create a perfect harmony between them. I think the first song I heard of Arcade Fire was Rebellion which is a great upbeat song in itself, but its even better if you listen to it with the previous one Haiti (the song ends with the beginning of Rebellion).
– Haiti
– Rebellion
Actually just listen to their whole album Funeral, its a beautiful musical piece. Their second album Neon Bible keeps that great original sound, and adds a little Religion questioning to it (not only in the lyrics, they recorded part of it in a church).
– Intervention
And finally to top it off, they sing parts of songs in French !! I am originally from France, and I study in Montreal, where the band is based at present.
– Une Annee Sans Lumiere [Funeral]

Arctic Monkeys

Music ! As much as I have been a passionate for photography in the recent years, music has shaped my life since the very beginning. Every period of my life so far is define but certain musicians, its like the soundtrack of my life. Its maybe not the best music compilation out there, but I love it because it helped my build my current itunes library and my general taste in music.

But no, really, the Arctic Monkeys are great morning-trying-to-get-energized music. I remember reading about their historical debut, and curiously listening to their stuff, and liking it. But then I kinda forgot about it, moved on to something else. But a few weeks ago I came across their latest album. And its hit me a bit like Viva la Vida, I just can’t get over it. They come at you with these crazy riffs and thunderous drumming, it seems to purify my day and get things going. Like getting to my first cup of coffee.

Sometimes they slowly pick up the pace throughout the song until you are unconsciously miming the drums and going crazy, like in the song 505:

- 505

Or sometimes they just throw it all at you from the start:

- Brianstorm

I wrote the beginning of this post this morning, but then spent 2hours trying to figure out how to post these songs, and gave up to go do better things. Now, 12 hours later, I have found the solution and proudly have embedded a song in my blog.

High five to me.
